Biomass and heat pumps.

Summary

Biomass is treated as CO2 neutral, this makes it interesting for well-wooded countries like Austria. In rural regions, biomass and electrically driven heat pumps are a good combination. The heat pump is used for base load operation and the biomass-fired boiler for peak load operation. Medium-sized district heating systems with biomass-based cogeneration plants for heat and electricity production offer an efficient utilisation of the fuel. Both small and large systems reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly.
