Summary

The Dutch industry has rediscovered CO2 as a refrigerant. In January 2002, a special meeting was held on the occasion of the first industrial NH3/CO2 cascade system. Since then, more than 14 such systems have been realized or are under construction. Industrial end users are choosing CO2 due to its external and product safety compared with ammonia and its energy and environmental aspects compared with synthetic refrigerants. Energy savings of 15% and a 30 to 40% reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions are possible compared with synthetic refrigerants. Governmental grants played an important role in this breakthrough.
