CFD simulations and measurements of carbon dioxide transport in a passive house.

Summary
The airtightness of passive houses may cause the accumulation of contaminants within their structure. To determine, whether, and to what extent, this phenomenon occurs, measurements were performed in an existing passive house. The only considered indoor source of CO2 during measurements was human respiration, meaning that the CO2 concentration is strictly connected to the number of occupants and their lifestyle (Levin H., 2003) which is why it was chosen as an air quality indicator. Three cases where taken under consideration. First, carbon dioxide sensors where installed within the house for the period of four weeks, what enabled measuring the CO2 concentration. Next, a multizone simulation was conducted using the CONTAMW application. Finally, a CFD simulation was performed using the ANSYS Fluent software. In the final simulation, only the master bedroom was taken under consideration, as it was occupied frequently and had one of the highest concentrations of carbon dioxide. In the simulation the detailed breathing process was analyzed.
