Summary

PLAIN AND ARTIFICIALLY ROUGHENED METAL SURFACES HAVE BEEN CHARACTERISED FOR POOL BOILING HEAT TRANSFER DATA USING R11. SCANNING AND TRANSMISSION MICROSCOPIC ANALYSIS OF THE PLATE SURFACES, SURFACE ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENTS AND SURFACE DRAG COEFFICIENTS ON A SOFT SURFACE SUCH AS POLYVINYL CHLORIDE HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED. THE BOILING HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS, SURFACE TEMPERATURES REQUIRED FOR INITIATING FULLY DEVELOPED BOILING AND THE BOILING SITE DENSITY HAVE BEEN MEASURED. A SHIFT IN BOILING CURVES IS OBTAINED WITH INCREASING SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF THE PLATES AND IT COULD BE RELATED TO THE SURFACE DRAG COEFFICIENT OF DIFFERENT PLATES EMPLOYED DURING EXPERIMENTS.
