Summary

AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT TO REVEAL THE PHYSICAL PROCESS OF GAS HYDRATE FORMATION IN A COOL STORAGE TANK INCORPORATED INTO AN R12 VAPOUR COMPRESSION LOOP. LIQUID R12 FLOWS INTO THE TANK AND EVAPORATES, BEFORE FLOWING OUT, RESULTING IN A COOLING OF THE FLUIDS AND IN THE FORMATION OF R12 HYDRATE AS A COOL STORAGE MEDIUM. IT HAS BEEN FOUND THAT THE HYDRATE APPEARS IN 2 DIFFERENT FORMS, MAKING UP SEPARATE LAYERS: ONE IN THE FORM OF SLURRY AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WATER PHASE AND THE OTHER IN THE FORM OF A SOLIDIFIED FOAM ON THE FREE SURFACE OF THE WATER PHASE.
