DESCRIBES LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE AND HOW THE LEGIONELLA BACTERIA ARE SPREAD. CONCENTRATES ON THE ROLE OF AIR CONDITIONING COOLING TOWERS AND POINTS OUT THAT A PROPERLY MAINTAINED COOLING SYSTEM HAS NEVER BEEN IMPLICATED AS THE SOURCE OF AN OUTBREAK OF LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE: PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF LOOKING AFTER BUILDINGS SIMPLY IGNORE GUIDELINES FOR MINIMISING THE RISK OF THE DISEASE. DESCRIBES ALTERNATIVES TO COOLING TOWERS AND NOTES THEIR MUCH HIGHER COSTS. EXAMINES WHAT ACTIONS CAN BE TAKEN TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INFECTION.
