RETHINKING COOLING TOWER TREATMENT.
Type of article: Article
Summary
DESCRIBES A NEW APPROACH TO PREVENTING OUTBREAKS OF LEGIONNAIR ES' DISEASE CAUSED BY WET COOLING TOWERS. AS IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ERADICATE LEGIONELLA BACTERIA, AN ENVIRONMENT MUST BE CREATED THAT IS HOSTILE TO LEGIONELLA. REPORTS INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE EFFECT OF THE PH OF THE WATER IN THE COOLING TOWER WHICH FOUND THAT THE BACTERIA ARE SEVERELY WEAKENED AT HIGH PH, MAKING THE JOB OF A BIOCIDE MUCH EASIER. NOTES THAT STEEL COOLING TOWERS OF THE TYPE COMMONLY USED FOR AIR CONDITIONING APPLICATIONS ARE ONLY STABLE OVER THE PH RANGE 7 TO 8. OUTSIDE THIS RANGE, COOLING TOWERS OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS HAVE TO BE USED AND SOME ARE NOW BEING PRODUCED WHICH ARE STABLE UP TO PH 11. (INT. BUILD. SERV. ABSTR., GB., 25, N 6, 1990/11-12, 90-01879.
