Summary
When a cooling tower is used as a reheater for air-source heat pumps in winter, it is called a heating tower. Heating towers are generally available in two types: "open" and "closed". The authors describe their newly developed closed-type heating towers. The main features are as follows: the installation space is equivalent to that for the open-type. Defrosting becomes almost unnecessary. Accordingly, the closed-type heating tower will enjoy greater demand for the increasing number of district heating and cooling systems, and be able to contribute to enhance the reliability of an air conditioning system.
