Summary

A programme of experimental work has been set up to study the effects of a coil of wire as a turbulence promoter in a horizontal R22 evaporator tube. The effect was measured by taking the temperatures at sides, bottom and top of the tube throughout its length when refrigerant quality was known at tube inlet and outlet. At all heat fluxes and coil pitches tried, results showed a marked similarity in top, bottom and side temperatures beginning very near to the tube inlet, indicating rapid formation of annular flow. In a plain tube top temperature under most conditions was significantly higher, indicating separation between liquid and vapour flows. Pressure drop increased with the closer pitch of the turbulator coil. D.W.H.
