Summary

The application of chemical heat pump technology requires the performance of the reactor to be improved. In a fixed bed reactor, the use of thermochemical materials based on carbon fibres (powder form) gave promising results. However, two problems currently restrict reactor performance: (i) the need for higher thermal conductivity in the fixed bed, along with adequate permeability and (ii) the need for enhanced wall-particle heat transfer. The proposed material is based on a new type of small-scale carbon fibres (nanofibres) with an anisotropic thermal conductivity different to that of industrial fibres, and with an improved effective thermal conductivity. Another advantage of using this material is that the wall-particle heat transfer is enhanced because of its small size. A first thermochemical material based on carbon nanofibres and nickel chloride has been synthesized.
