Summary

Cold storage of Braeburn apples under ultra low oxygen (ULO) controlled atmosphere, lowered stepwise from 3 to 1%, makes it possible to reduce core browning and to maintain good firmness. However, other types of deterioration may occur. The optimal harvest date for storage was also studied. Large fruits from trees with a low fruit load are far more sensitive to preservation diseases.
