COLD STORAGE OF PROTEA CUT FLOWERS IN SOUTH AFRICA: AN OVERVIEW.

Author(s) : FERREIRA D. I.

Summary

PROTEAS HAVE TO BE SHIPPED OVER LONG DISTANCES TO MARKETS IN EUROPE AND THE USA. THE BROWNING OF LEAVES OF SEVERAL SPECIES IS CAUSED BY WATER LOSS THROUGH TRANSPIRATION AND HIGH RESPIRATION RATE. THESE PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES CAN BE INHIBITED BY LOW TEMPERATURE. PROTEA CUT FLOWERS ARE COOLED AT 278 K (5 DEG C) BEFORE THEY ARE PACKED AND SHIPPED. FORCED AIR PRECOOLING IS ALSO PRACTISED. DUE TO RISING AIR FREIGHT COSTS, THE SHIPMENT OF PROTEAS BY SEA HAS TO BE CONSIDERED. THIS INVOLVES COLD STORAGE AT 275 K (2 DEG C) FOR 3 WEEKS. UNTIL NOW ONLY LIMITED SUCCESS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED. THE FLOWER HEADS WITHSTOOD THE STORAGE MUCH BETTER THAN THE LEAVES.
