Summary

THE AIR LAYER IN A RECTANGULAR CAVITY HAVING ISOTHERMAL VERTICAL WALLS OF DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES IS WIDELY USED IN THE THERMAL INSULATION OF WALLS. THE AUTHORS SUGGEST THAT THE HEAT FLOW BE IMPEDED BY SETTING APPROPRIATE PARTITION PLATES IN THE RECTANGULAR AIR CAVITY IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE HOT WALL IS POSITIONED HIGHER THAN THE COLD WALL IN EACH SEPARATE AIR CAVITY. THE NUMERICAL COMPUTATIONS AND EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT FOR A CASE THAT THE PARTITION PLATES WERE FLAT PLATES. THE AUTHORS HAVE CONCLUDED THAT THE AIR CAVITY PARTITIONED BY CORRUGATED PLATES SHOWS BETTER HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS THAN FLAT PLATES. FREE CONVECTION AND HEAT TRANSFER IN THE AIR CAVITY WHICH IS PARTITIONED BY THE CORRUGATED PLATES HAS BEEN ANALYZED BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD TO INVESTIGATE THE HEAT TRANSFER RESPONSES. RADIATION HEAT TRANSFER WAS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN THE COMPUTATIONS.
