Comfort in office buildings: a wider approach based on adaptive theory.

Summary

Comfort in office buildings is often considered in terms of thermal variables only. However, field studies have suggested that comfort should be considered in a far wider context, i.e. including the effects of non-thermal contextual variables, and non-contextual and psychological variables. An adaptive algorithm is suggested; proposals for a model are discussed, and applied to field studies carried out in 15 buildings. It is shown that adaptive comfort theory can be applied to both naturally ventilated and air-conditioned buildings, that non-thermal contextual variables have a small, but significant, effect on perceptions of comfort, and that non-contextual and psychological variables seem to have an effect on comfort, but require further investigation.
