Summary
In the last years FGAS determined a huge shift toward natural or low GWP refrigerant re-quiring the improvement of unit cost and efficiency, with low GWP replacement actually under search for a long term solution. Directives like ECODESIGN address reduction of energy consumptions and consequently reduction of indirect emission. Effort to get im-provements in direct energy consumption is the another way to improve TEWI (Total En-ergy Warming Impact) and also get beneficial financial effect on a yearly base, linking to-gether the choice of refrigerant, performance and cost of any solution. Commercial Refrigeration systems, during real usage, are subjected to huge variations of thermal loading conditions, mostly dependent on climate area, customer usage and HVAC store management; most of their working life is thus far from design conditions. In this scenario, it is of great importance to save energy during off–design. Year round seasonal consumption is thus the real playground for technological improvement that is obviously mixed together with the complex choice of refrigerants. The reliability increase and cost decrease of modern electronic systems, combined with variable speed motor can offer practical way to improve systems intended to achieve their maximum performance all the year /all the day and that adapt themselves to the different field conditions. In this paper we present results from a recently proposed way to use water loop self contained units (WL) with variable speed compressor working with R410A, and a new solution with adaptive variable mass flow air curtains by use of variable speed digital fans. Both solutions are designed to always achieve off-design adaptation trough the full field conditions variability and both are aimed to a step improvement of energy consumption and environmental impact.
