Reciprocating compressors with VFD energy saving potential in supermarket refrigeration.

Author(s) : GASPER R., PFEIL V.

Summary

In the past, mainly initial investment costs and reliability have been the driving forces for the selection of the refrigeration systems in supermarket applications. At present, energy saving criteria become more and more the focus of attention. Characteristic features of supermarket applications are year round operation regardless of outdoor ambient and wide load variations in short time intervals. This paper shows the potential of energy savings if frequency controlled reciprocating compressors are used in supermarket refrigeration. Furthermore, a comparison of field measurement results between a reciprocating compressor system with VFD and a conventional system is presented.
