Summary

ILLUSTRATES AN EXTENSION TO AN EXISTING HEAD OFFICE WHICH COMPRISES FURTHER OFFICES SURROUNDED BY A DENSELY-PLANTED WINTER GARDEN. DESCRIBES AN INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF THE PLANTS ON THE O2 AND/OR CO2 CONCENTRATIONS IN THE EXTENSION. PROVIDES THE RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS, WHICH INCLUDED HEAT ENERGY CONSUMPTION, HEAT AND MOISTURE FLUCTUATIONS AND THE SUPPLY OF NATURAL LIGHT. COMPARISON MEASUREMENTS WERE ALSO MADE IN THE ADJOINING AIR-CONDITIONED AREA OF THE BUILDING AND OF OUTSIDE AIR CONDITIONS. ANALYSES THE FINDINGS. CONCLUDES THAT THE PLANTING OF THE WINTER GARDEN CANNOT CAUSE SIGNIFICANT FLUCTUATIONS IN THE O2 CONTENT OF THE INDOOR AIR AND THAT STATEMENTS TO THE CONTRARY IN THE LITERATURE ARE BASED ON INCORRECT INTERPRETATIONS OF MEASURED DATA. SLIGHTLY HIGHER CO2 LEVELS CAN BE MET BY INCREASED VENTILATION. (INT. BUILD. SERV. ABSTR., GB. , 24, N 2, 1989/03-04, 89-00578.
