HEAT PUMPS ARE WIDESPREAD IN THE AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEMS OF OFFICE BUILDINGS IN JAPAN. HOWEVER, MOST OF THEM ARE UNITARY HEAT PUMPS. LARGE HEAT PUMPS USED AS A CENTRAL AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEM ARE NOT COMPETITIVE IN THE MARKET. THE PAPER DISCUSSES THE COMPETITIVE POSITION OF HEAT PUMPS AND GIVES AN EVALUATION OF TOTAL COSTS.
