Compression simulation of a reciprocating type refrigeration compressor using R-407C and R-410A.

Summary

An analysis was made to investigate the impact on the efficiency of a reciprocating refrigeration compressor while using several refrigerants. It is known that because of the Kyoto Protocol the formerly most used refrigerants CFC-12 and HCFC-22 have been proposed to be substituted by the zeotropic mixtures R-407C and R-410A. A simulation algorithm was developed of the operation of a reciprocating compressor. The simulation results were compared to experimental measurements in order to evaluate the accuracy. The experimental measurements concerning the performance of a refrigeration facility took place at the laboratory refrigeration plant of the ATP Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens. The laboratory refrigeration facility was designed from start. A new heating/cooling network was established for the simulation of the environmental and chamber conditions. A variety of measuring instruments were used such as proportional-integral controllers for the exact control of the temperature with electrical resistances, energy analyzers to calculate the exact amount of consumed energy, high accuracy Coriolis mass flow counters, water coolers for chamber conditions, liquid and air temperature sensors in combination with an accuracy data logger to log the measurements, as well as data acquisition system for processing the signal from a pressure sensor inside the cylinder of the reciprocating compressor under examination. Using as input data the known geometry and the pressures and temperatures at the inlet and outlet of the compressor the simulation algorithm predicts with sufficient accuracy the mass flow rate through the compressor, therefore, it is possible to be utilized even in industrial facilities where the lack of extra measuring instruments is a significant problem in tracking bad performance or failures of a refrigeration unit.
