Compressor protection starts with a knowledge of refrigerant-oil basics.
Type of article: Article
Summary
Most compressor failures have been classified as lubrication failures. The author presents why many people fail to realize the problem actually originates with refrigerant control, refrigerant-oil relationship, typical defects of improper control, in particular, refrigerant migration, liquid refrigerant flooding, and liquid slugging. He describes possible corrective actions such as minimum refrigerant charge, pumpdown cycle, crankcase heaters, suction line accumulators, and oil separators.
