EFFICIENT DESIGN OF A DIRECT EXPANSION WATER CHILLER REQUIRES THAT THE HEAT EXCHANGER WILL TRANSFER THE MAXIMUM HEAT DUTY WITH MINIMUM PRESSURE DROP AT MINIMUM COST. THE COST DEPENDS, AMONG OTHER THINGS, ON THE HEAT TRANSFER AREA, NUMBER OF TUBES, LENGTH AND DIAMETER OF THE TUBES, NUMBER OF TUBE PASSES, SHELL DIAMETER AND NUMBER OF BAFFLES. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE STRUCTURE OF A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF A DIRECT EXPANSION EVAPORATOR USING PUBLISHED HEAT TRANSFER AND PRESSURE DROP CORRELATIONS.
