Describes two IBM-PC-compatible software programs which, used together or even separately, could educate their users about community energy planning. CHOICES is a planning-level spreadsheet program that estimates potential energy savings from efficient urban design. Its successor, PLACES, will provide a comprehensive, integrated evaluation of all forms of energy used in a community's energy budget. HeatMap helps analyse, design or modify district heating and cooling systems.
