Summary

AN EXPERIMENT IS PERFORMED ON THE HEAT TRANSFER ON VARIOUS PATTERNED SURFACES IN WHICH DROPWISE AND FILMWISE CONDENSATIONS COEXIST SIMULTANEOUSLY AT ADJACENT POSITIONS. THE DEPARTURE OF DROPS FROM THE DROPWISE CONDENSATION PART CAN BE PROMOTED, AND SO THE AVERAGE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT OVER THE WHOLE SURFACE CAN BE MADE LARGER THAN THE MEAN VALUE OF THOSE OF DROPWISE AND FILMWISE CONDENSATIONS. FURTHERMORE, IT IS FOUND THAT SOME PATTERNED SURFACES DELAY THE TRANSITION TEMPERATURE FROM DROPWISE TO FILMWISE CONDENSATION AND SHOW HIGHER HEAT FLUX THAN WHOLE DROPWISE CONDENSATION SURFACE.
