Summary

At the beginning of 2003, the worldwide container ship fleet had reached a total of 3040 vessels, with around 6 million container spaces on board, representing an increase of 10% in terms of spaces. 195 new container ships were delivered in 2002, with the trend continuing towards larger vessels. Charter lines controlled around 50% of the ships and 43% of container spaces. The average size of the vessels grew further to 1964 TEU per container ship, while the mean size per new vessel was over 3000 TEU. At present, around 45% of refrigerated sea cargo is transported by container ships, with the remaining 55% transported by conventional means in the holds or on the decks of reefer vessels.
