CONTROL OF FUNGAL DECAY IN CARROTS BY PRE-TREATMENT WITH UV.

Author(s) : MERCIER J., et al.

Summary

EXPOSURE TO UV ELICITS THE SYNTHESIS OF 6-METHOXYMELLEIN (6-MM) IN CARROTS INVOLVED IN THEIR DISEASE RESISTANCE. THE POSSIBILITY OF CONTROLLING FUNGAL DECAY WITH UV HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED. FOUR DOSES OF UV WERE TESTED FOR THEIR EFFECTIVENESS IN INDUCING 6-MM ACCUMULATION AND RESISTANCE TO GREY MOLD (BOTRYTIS CINEREA) IN CARROTS STORED AT 1 DEG C. 6-MM HAS BEEN MEASURED IN THE PEEL 25 DAYS AFTER THE TREE THE REMAINING CARROTS WERE INOCULATED WITH MYCELIAL PLUGS OF B. CINEREA. CARROTS WHICH RECEIVED THE HIGHEST DOSE WERE THE MOST RESISTANT TO INFECTION WHEN ASSESSED 48 DAYS AFTER INOCULATION.
