Summary

Thermostat-controlled electric cables are used to avoid the build-up of ice and snow on roofs, gutters, drainpipes, pavements and other outdoor areas. This leads to very high energy consumption as the cables are switched on for unnecessarily long periods. However, a new control unit for heat cables has been developed in Norway, which reduces the energy consumption for thawing to a minimum. Energy reductions of more than 95% have been measured on new buildings and in retrofitting projects.
