Cooling ceilings: a complex task for research departments

Les plafonds refroidissants : une tâche complexe pour les bureaux d'études.

Summary

The trends today are toward cooling ceilings combined with an air diffusion system that adheres to air-velocity standards while taking into account the degree of turbulence, in order to satisfy the occupant of the room. The author introduces a range of ceilings that uses an aluminium thermal conduction section in which a copper pipe is crimped. It is difficult to compare the specifications of this equipment, for the reference temperature is either the temperature of the ambient air (i.e. disregarding the radiation of the double ceiling), or the temperature of the environment, as felt by the occupant, taking into account the ceiling radiations. The reference height in the room is also an important parameter. Soon, a standard protocol will set down the main parameters. The thermal insulation above the double ceiling creates an effect of acoustical dampening. In any case, mechanical ventilation of hygienic air, cooled down to the room temperature is necessary. J.L.
