Cooling in summer with winter cold.

Author(s) : BUITENHUIS J. J.

Summary

Seasonal cold storage is an energy saving and profitable cooling technique for air conditioning and process cooling in the temperature range of 6 to 15 deg C. Cold storage systems use groundwater, but are based on a thermal and hydraulic balance in the soil. No groundwater is discharged, which makes cold storage an attractive option for industrial cooling purposes. The first results from a realised cold storage project for an hospital are positive and confirm the ideas on the design and optimisation of these systems. Measurements show an overall COP of 13.5 for the cold storage system, which is in coincidence with the original calculations.
