Cooling load reduction with application of automated shading control.

Summary
An automated living and working environment is becoming a commonly used service. This paper deals with dynamically automated control of shading in buildings during mid-seasons (spring and autumn). During transitional seasons, substantial reduction in cooling loads can be achieved with correctly and dynamically regulated shading elements of the building envelope. In addition to shading, the controller also regulates internal luminance levels, internal temperatures and their harmonization. The automated system is designed as a cascade controller with fuzzy controllers functioning as primary and conventional PI controllers functioning as secondary ones. The system functions in real time and under real environmental conditions. For the purpose of testing, an experimental chamber with an opening on the southern side was built. changeable geometry of the opening was realized with the automated externally positioned PVC roller blind. Proper functioning as well as fine-tuning of the regulator was achieved through a series of tests conducted during spring time. The experiments justified the use of automated shading for the control of internal temperatures during mid-seasons in the Mediterranean and temperate climates.
