Summary

After a description of a cooling tower, its operation, and of the semi-open cooling circuit with its necessary equipment, the problems encountered are studied successively. Corrosion, various types of which are explained in detail (corrosion-erosion, differential ventilation, chloride action, sulfate action, corrosion through living organisms, corrosion through bi-metallic batteries) necessitates preventive remedies that are outlined. Scaling happens when the water calco-carbonic balance is moved in a given point in the system, often because of a lack of control of the concentration rate. Preventive and curative remedies are given. For circuit clogging or pollution, there are preventive remedies and curative remedies that are indicated. Spray or water-running humidifiers are especially studied: description, operation and specific remedies.
