WITH THE INCREASING USE OF HIGH PRESSURE NITROGEN FOR INJECTION INTO WELLS TO ENHANCE RECOVERY OF OIL AND GAS, THREE TYPES OF CRYOGENIC UNITS HAVE NOW ESTABLISHED THEMSELVES IN THE INDUSTRY: THE SO-CALLED < EXPANDER PLANTS > FOR SEPARATING ETHANE AND HIGHER HYDROCARBONS FROM THE METHANE IN THE ASSOCIATED GAS, LARGE NITROGEN PRODUCTION UNITS OF IMPROVED DESIGN, AND NITROGEN REJECTION PLANTS TO REMOVE THE NITROGEN AFTER IT HAS BROKEN THROUGH AND IS INCREASINGLY DILUTING THE ASSOCIATED GAS. THE PAPER DESCRIBES THESE PLANTS AND SHOWS HOW THEY ARE DESIGNED TO COPE WITH THE VARYING NITROGEN CONTENT OF THE GAS, WHICH RISES IN THE COURSE OF A TEN YEAR OPERATING PERIOD FROM PRACTICALLY ZERO TO SOME 70% OF THE GAS TREATED.
