Cryogenic ultrahigh vacuum installation for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Summary

The authors describe a helium cryostat with an ultrahigh vacuum chamber for placing the STM. By means of this installation it is possible to perform sample treatment in situ (breaking, annealing, ion etching) and to do long time STM experiments at various temperatures of the sample from several hundred degrees Kelvin down to liquid helium.
