Author(s) : GIRARD A.

Type of article: Article, Review

Summary

Understanding and mastering turbulent flow is a major challenge in terms of scientific problem, but also with respect to technological and economical aspects. In order to achieve very high Reynolds turbulent flows, cryogenic engineering is a serious candidate which physicists of turbulent flows have wished to develop. This article proposes a state of the art in this domain. The fundamental challenges for turbulence are briefly described. The main advantages of cryogenic helium as a working fluid for turbulent flows are described, and free convection cryogenic experiments are presented.
