Cryopreservation of apical meristems of Japanese shallot (Allium wakegi A.) by vitrification and subsequent high plant regeneration.

Summary
The average rate of shoot formation about 30 days after planting was 80%. This vitrification procedure was successfully applied to six other cultivars of Allium wakegi. The results also demonstrated the feasibility of conserving vitrified meristems in a deep-freezer at -152 deg C for at least 3 months without decrease in plant regeneration.
