Summary

CRYOSURGERY, THOUGH STILL NOT WIDELY USED, IS USEFUL FOR THE TREATMENT OF HEMORRHOIDS, CONSIDERING ITS CONVENIENT AND SAFE METHOD. AS TO THE INDICATIONS FOR CRYOSURGERY, SEVERE HEMORRHOID AND PROLAPSE HAVE BEEN RULED OUT. SATISFACTORY RESULTS WERE OBTAINED BUT A DRAWBACK OF THIS TREATMENT IS LOWER DIGESTIVE TRACT HEMORRHAGE, WHICH OCCURRED IN 2 OF 83 PROLAPSE PATIENTS (2.1%) AFTER CRYOSURGERY. AS FOR ITS PATHOGENESIS, AN AUTOIMMUNEREACTION AT THE SITE OF THE TERMINAL ILEUM IS POSTULATED. TEMPORARY BLEEDING WOULD OCCUR AROUND THE 14TH POSTOPERATIVE DAY.
