Summary

PARS PLANITIS IS A SYNDROME OF CHRONIC INTRAOCULAR INFLAMMATION OF UNKNOWN ETIOLOGY, AFFECTS ADULTS OF EITHER SEX, AND IS BILATERAL IN SOME 75% OF CASES. IT IS KNOWN FOR ITS RECURRENCE AND LEADS TO VISUAL IMPAIRMENT BY CAUSING CATARACT, GLAUCOMA, MACULAR OEDEMA, OR RETINAL DETACHMENT. AMONG THE MANY TREATMENTS TO CONTROL THISDISEASE PROCESS, SYSTEMIC STEROIDS HAS TO BE GIVEN FREQUENTLY. REPEATED USE OF STEROIDS MAY LEAD TO STEROID INDUCED COMPLICATIONS. CRYOTHERAPY TO THE AFFECTED AREAS OF PERIPHERAL RETINA HAS BEEN TRIED, AND ITS ROLE IS PRESENTED. IT WAS SEEN THAT CRYOTHERAPY TO INFLAMMATORY AREAS DOES CAUSE ITS NECROSIS, LESSENS THE RELAPSES, AND AVOIDS PROLONGED USE OF STEROIDS.
