TRANS-SCLERAL CRYOCOAGULATION BEFORE ENUCLEATION IN A CASE OF CHOROIDAL MELANOMA.

Author(s) : FASCHINGER C.

Summary

UP TO CERTAIN DIAMETERS AND LOCATIONS, CHOROIDAL MELANOMAS CAN BE TREATED BY PHOTOCOAGULATION OR RADIOTHERAPY. BUT IN SOME CASES THE EYEBALL HAS TO BE ENUCLEATED. TO PREVENT A DISTRIBUTION OF TUMOUR CELLS ALONG SCLERAL PATHWAYS, THE AUTHORS PERFORMED A TRANS-SCLERAL CRYOCOAGULATION AROUND AND UPON THE TUMOUR. THE COAGULATION WAS DONE WITH A CARBON-DIOXIDE CRYO-UNIT FOR 90 SECONDS AND AT 213 K (-60 DEG C). HISTOLOGICALLY NEITHER THE SCLERA NOR THE ADJACENT TUMOUR SHOWED EVIDENT CHANGES. BUT THE AUTHORS BELIEVE THAT THE CRYOCOAGULATION PERFORMED IMMEDIATELY BEFORE ENUCLEATION HELPS TO PREVENT DISSEMINATION OF THE TUMOUR CELLS.
