Summary

Onset conditions for ice removal phenomenon are examined experimentally as well as analytically. Glass, acrylic resin, polyvinyl chloride, silicone resin and copper cooling plates are used. The removal or non-removal of crystal ice is related to the heat flux at the cooled plate surface when the latent heat of freezing is discharged with ice formation; the heat flux ratio q2/q1 is an important parameter of the onset condition for ice removal, where q1 represents the heat flux from the plate surface to the cooled plate and q2 represents the heat flux from the plate surface to the solution.
