Summary
Data processing is changing the nature of man's working capacity. Over the last ten years smaller, less cosdy computers with increased performance have been developed. The miniaturisation of electronic components and the perfecting of operating systems has enabled nonspecialists and small companies and organisations to use these machines. Computers were introduced in the refrigeration field firstly for routine office management and then for calculations for scientific research and in the design of machinery and installations. Because of the complexity of calculations in air conditioning, data processing in this area first began with group study offices and then gradually became associated with individual companies. Particular attention was focused on simulation processes, an idea/application of the computer. This, coupled with its use as a decisionmaker at all levels, resulted in a great deal of development taking place. Process control allows permanent supervision of machine function by remote monitoring, and is the forerunner to remote management where the computer can modify operating regimes without human intervention. This assumes that detectors accurately transmit information on variables to be controlled, but here perfection is still to be achieved. Operational optimisation by computer is already being used in cold stores for the storage and preparation of packages of quick-frozen products. Full automation only encounters problems in the case of mechanised handling. With the advent of data banks and robots, refrigeration is benefitting from computer developments, and reciprocally, refrigeration is assisting in the progress of data-processing by providing low temperatures to increase computer performance. This review of data processing applications hints at many developments in the future, and suggests that refrigerationists must begin to prepare themselves.
