De-icing electrical power lines: research and development projects.
Projets de recherche et développement sur le déglaçage des lignes de transport.
Type of article: Article
Summary
Following extensive damage to its network caused by heavy icy rain showers in January 1998, Hydro-Québec has replaced damaged lines using lines complying with more stringent requirements (designed to withstand 65 mm of ice, anti-cascade pylons, shorter distances between pylons). Hydro-Québec has also implemented an ambitious research and development programme focusing on power transport and distribution. The de-icing aspect of this programme is presented in this article.
