DEFROSTING: AN APPROACH TO OPTIMAL CONTROL.

Author(s) : FAHLEN P.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE ARTICLE IS RESTRICTED TO THE CONTROL OF DEFROSTING ON HEAT PUMPS USING AN AIR HEAT SOURCE. THE OPTIMIZATION CRITERIA IS FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY INDICATED BY HEAT OUTPUT COP WHEN MAXIMUM HEAT IS REQUIRED, AND BY HEAT INPUT COP WHEN POTENTIAL OUTPUT IS GREATER THAN REQUIRED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT RELATIVELY SIMPLE MICROPROCESSOR CONTROL CAN BE USED TO COMPUTE THESE OPTIMUMS, INITIATING DEFROST ONLY WHEN COP FALLS. TWO METHODS ARE DESCRIBED FOR THE REQUIRED MEASUREMENTS, THE SECOND BEING SIMPLER BUT SLIGHTLY LESS ACCURATE. D.W.H.
