Summary

At Flowerauction Holland, a Dutch cooperative serving 6900 growers, all flowers and pot plants are cooled in order to increase the export value on the market. Since 1985, 43,000 m2 cooling capacity has been used. For two rooms, the "wet cooling system" has been chosen in order to prevent the flowers from drying out and 11,000 kg of NH3 have been used to cool these rooms. In a third room, built in 1997, a "dry cooling system" has been chosen, and uses only 2 x 35 kg of NH3. Depending on the type of flowers, the rooms can be cooled to 8 or 2 °C. The paper describes the investment conditions as well as maintenance and safety.
