Design and testing of a 40 W free-piston Stirling cycle cooling unit.

Summary

Calculations suggest that average power consumption for a well insulated 30-litre portable box would be about 8 W at fresh food temperatures and 15 W at freezing temperatures in a 30 °C environment. Performance curves for the cooling unit are presented so that system performance may be estimated for different applications. Total mass of the unit is about 1 kg. Integration into portable cool boxes with a simple thermosiphon system is shown to operate with low temperature differentials. Initial test data for the prototype unit are included.
