IIR document

Design of energy efficient mechanically ventilated buildings.

Summary

The paper discusses the design of mechanically ventilated buildings with specific attention to the energy efficiency of operation of mechanical ventilation systems. It identifies three stages in the design of a mechanically ventilated building, namely reducing the cooling load, achieving low duct air speeds and providing an efficient air distribution system. An efficient mechanically ventilated building will have mechanical ventilation rates typically one to two air changes per hour and fan power levels of 1 kilowatt/m3.second or less.
