Summary

ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN CHEST FREEZERS WAS HALVED BETWEEN 1967 AND 1990, AND REDUCED TO A THIRD BETWEEN 1969 AND 1991 FOR UPRIGHT FREEZERS. ONLY IN THE CASE OF < 3-STAR >-REFRIGERATORS IS THE REDUCTION SOMEWHAT SMALLER (1991: NEARLY 60% OF THE CONSUMPTION IN 1969). FOR ALL THREE APPLIANCE CATEGORIES THE MEAN VALUES DERIVED FROM THE NEWEST TESTS SHOW THE LOWEST CONSUMPTION. THE PROGRESS THAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED SINCE 1987 IN INTRODUCING INSULATING MATERIALS WITH MARKEDLY LOWER CONTENT OF R11 APPARENTLY HAS NOT HAD ANY NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON ENERGY CONSUMPTION.
