Development and test of a 300 Wh/10 kW flywheel energy storage system.

Author(s) : KOCH R., WAGNER R., SANDER M., et al.

Summary

Based on their experience with superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) technology, the authors developed an integrated high speed flywheel system (300 Wh/10 kW), which is especially designed for long-term stationary energy storage. The dynamic behaviour of the system was tested and evaluated with respect to axial and radial stiffness, damping and critical speeds. Rotational loss characteristics were measured, and the energy efficiency of the system has been estimated by analyzing different components of the flywheel system for a whole charge/standby/discharge cycle.
