Summary
Phase change material (PCM) slurries can serve as heat transfer fluids and thermal energy storage (TES) media simultaneously. Their advantages of fluidity, relatively constant phase change temperatures, and high TES density make them promising working fluids for solar photovoltaic thermal (PVT) applications. This paper presents the development of a novel salt hydrate PCM slurry to facilitate thermal management, low-grade solar heat transportation and storage in PVT systems. It is prepared based on sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na2SO4·10H2O), with the assistance of nucleating agents, surfactants, and stabilisers to reduce the supercooling degree, control the particle size, and ameliorate the segregation, respectively. A series of measurements including differential scanning calorimetry, microscopic observation, density measurement, rheological characterisation, and stability test were carried out. The Na2SO4·10H2O slurry developed featured a TES density reaching around 5.2 folds of water over a temperature interval of 26.5-31.5°C.
