Summary

The authors have been developing the casting method using a frozen mould, in order to improve the economic merits and environmental acceptance. In this method, the mould was made using frozen sand. The water in sand was refrigerated in a vacuum freezer kept at -40 °C. The tests showed that manufacturing cast iron using this method produced the same quality as the conventional method. Moreover, it was found that this method is applicable for the special casting of nonferrous metals. Issues are application for large-scale moulds and better completion of the moulding systems.
