Qualitative determinations and the distribution of alloying elements in cryogenically treated high speed steels.

Summary
As compared to the reference variant without cooling, in all the cryogenically treated samples, there takes place a migration of the alloying elements towards the matrix, thus contributing to its hardening. Cryogenic treatment contributes to a supplementary precipitation of carbides, especially the chromium ones rich in iron. Cryogenic treatment produces a powerful precipitation of wolfram carbides while the precipitation of the vanadium carbides is more reduced. Although molybdenum for the cryogenic variants is displaced towards the matrix, it produces the percentage doubling of the molybdenum carbide by creating favourable conditions for the formation of some complex molybdenum carbides. The variants of cryogenic treatments lead to the favourable redistribution of the alloying elements between the carburic phase and the matrix, thus contributing to the cutting characteristics of the high speed steel tools. The paper points out the complexity of the carbides, the solubility of the alloying elements in the carburic phase and the relatively increased degree of participation of iron in carbides formation.
