THE HISTORY OF MARINE REFRIGERATION IS BRIEFLY SUMMARIZED. IMPROVEMENTS IN TEMPERATURE MONITORING AND CONTROL AND IN AIR CIRCULATION AND REFRESHMENTS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN ALL TYPES OF EQUIPMENT. THERE HAVE BEEN DEVELOPMENTS IN REFRIGERATION MACHINERY, INSULATION MATERIALS AND DESIGN OF CARGO SPACES IN CONVENTIONAL SHIPS. CHANGES IN CONTROL REQUIREMENTS, INCREASED RANGES OF OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND RESTRICTION IN POWER DRAW HAVE LED TO CONTINUAL DEVELOPMENTS IN REFRIGERATED CONTAINER. PROGRESS IS NOW BEING MADE IN THE REMOTE MONITORING OF CONTAINER OPERATION ON-BOARD SHIPS.
